Guidelines for Geocaching in Minnesota Parks

When geocaching in Minnesota please familiarize yourself with the guidelines that some cities, counties and park systems have established:

Minnesota Cities[City][County][Other Areas]

City of Champlin Parks
All geocaches in the City of Champlin parks must be registered with the Parks and Public Works Department. More information may be found here.

City of Cloquet Parks
You must notify the City when you place a geocache in Cloquet. More information may be found here or contact Brian Fritsinger at 218-879-3347.

City of Detroit Lakes Parks
Geocaches are only permitted in GAR Park, Beaton park, and Long Lake Park. More information may be found here.

City of Duluth Parks
You must notify the Duluth Parks and Recreation Department when you place a geocache in one of their parks. More information may be found here.

City of Eden Prairie Parks
All geocaches in the City of Eden Prairie parks must be registered with the City of Eden Prairie Parks and Recreation Department. More information may be found here. Registration Permit Applications may be found here.

City of Pelican Rapids
You must notify the Pelican Rapids Parks and Recreation Department when you place a geocache in one of their parks. More information may be found here.


Minnesota Counties[City][County][Other Areas]

Anoka County Parks
Physical geocaches are not permitted in Anoka County Parks. More information may be found here.

Carver County Parks
All geocaches in Carver County parks must be registered with the county. More information may be found here.

Lake County Parks
Caches in Lake County are currently allowed only in the Demonstration Forest with permit obtained from the Lake County Commissioner. There is a limit of 5 caches in the Demonstration Forest at any time. Permit application may be found here.

Ramsey County Parks
All geocaches in Ramsey County parks must be registered with the county and there are limits on how many geocaches may be placed in each park. More information may be found here.


Other Minnesota Areas[City][County][Other Areas]

Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness
Physical geocaches are not permitted in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. More information may be found here.

Minnesota DNR Controlled Lands
Geocaching is permitted on some DNR land:

Geocaching is prohibited on all other Minnesota DNR land including, but not limited to: Aquatic Management Areas, Scientific Natural Areas, and Wildlife Management Areas. More information may be found here.

National Parks
Geocaching is prohibited in all National Parks. More information may be found here.

River Bend Nature Area
All geocaches in River Bend Nature Area must receive prior approval and there are limits on how many geocaches may be placed per person. More information may be found here.

Superior National Forest
Physical geocaches are allowed in the Superior National Forest but they must be registered at a Forest Service District Office before being placed. More information may be found here.

Three Rivers Park District
All geocaches in Three Rivers Park District parks must be registered with their main office. More information may be found here.
